Alwyn the Fletcher, wishing he had been born an orphan, left home at a young age to seek his fortune. However, when he found where it had been, it was apparent that Henry de Faucumberg had got there before him and spent it all. Left with no other choice, he was forced to take not particularly gainful employment in Sir Henrys household as a fletcher. It was during this time that he met Jane (nee Clough), whilst she was practicing with her longbow, waiting for her painted jugs to dry off in the sun. When she ran out of arrows he stepped forth and gallantly rose to the occasion. Jane was unable to resist the offer of his lengthy and finely turned shafts (the feathers were pretty too), and so they were wed.
